Best Glazed Ham Recipe

Spiral Ham is kinda a thing during Christmas and Easter. During the holidays, when my Uncle was hosting Christmas, we would have a Honey Baked Ham at their house almost every year. There is just something about a perfectly glazed ham with a sweet sticky crispy skin.

Truth be told, the leftovers are also my favorite part! We use to make ham sandwiches, split pea soup with the ham bone or ham and cheese omelets. Ham for days!

When you by a spiral ham most of the time it will have a glaze or seasoning packet in the pre-cooked ham package. Don’t use! Make your own! And guess what that’s what today’s recipe is all about! Tossing the packaged glaze and making an even better one that your people will swoon over! Trust me!

Is bone in ham better than boneless ham?

Yes, any time you can cook with the bone in the flavor will always be better. If you don’t want to deal with the bone, then I’d recommend buying a semi-boneless ham which has the shank bone removed but will still give you good flavor and will make it easier to cut.

How much Spiral Ham do I need per person?

A good starting point is 3/4 to 1 pound per person on a bone in spiral ham or 1/2 pound per person on a boneless spiral ham.

Do you need remove the skin from the Ham?

No. Keep the ham skin or rind on while baking, because it helps to baste the fat underneath leaving you with a flavorful ham.

Can you glaze the ham a day before?

No, this recipe contains sugar and maple syrup. Glazing the ham a day before will cause the ham to burn while it is cooking. I save the glaze in this recipe till the last 30 minutes so that the ham is perfectly cooked and you still have a nice sticky coating on the ham skin that everyone loves.

Ingredients you’ll need to make Maple Glazed Ham Recipe:

  • 10 pound bone in Spiral Ham – bone in and pre-cooked
  • Maple Syrup – the main sweetener for this glaze
  • Coconut Sugar – I use this in place of regular granulated sugar
  • Pomegranate Juice – this adds a nice tartness to the glaze
  • Dijon Mustard – the acid cuts through the sweetness to this glaze, plus everyone loves a little mustard with their ham 🙂
  • Warm Spices – I use ground Cinnamon, Clove and Allspice in this recipe because I think it goes very well with both the maple syrup and the pomegranate juice and really brings out the flavor of the ham
